If you want an affordable mid-size coupe—particularly one that has a more grown-up feel rather than sports-car edginess—the 2012 Honda Accord Coupe is one of your best choices. And in fact, the Accord is one of the few choices; the Nissan Altima remains a chief alternative, though the Nissan feels a little more overtly sporty and a little less refined.

The Accord Coupe is very closely related to the Honda Accord Sedan, but with a smoother downward-curving roofline, more sculpted flanks, and different styling around the rear, the Coupe can appear to be proportioned quite differently—even though the two versions essentially have the same front end. The longer doors can be deceiving, but overall the Accord Coupe is about three inches shorter than the sedan (two inches shorter in wheelbase).

Functionally, that means a little less legroom. And with the low roofline, ingress and egress are a little tough; if you're leaning toward the Coupe, don't have plans to carry adults back there on a regular basis as it's tight.

Accord Coupes drive much like their sedan counterparts. The base 190-hp four-cylinder engine is plenty perky, but step up to the V-6 and you get a more mature, powerful touring-coupe feel that, fully loaded, would pass as a luxury coupe. Ride quality is good, and steering feels secure yet responsive.

Pricing isn't that much different for the Accord Coupe than for Accord Sedan models. While they're well-equipped compared to other value-priced mid-sizers, our same complaint for the rest of the Accord holds here: Bluetooth hands-free is only included in top EX-L trims with leather and navigation.

The sedan's exterior has a prominent two-bar grille with chrome-style crossbars, windswept headlights, inset character lines along the body sides and distinct C-pillars. The coupe has a muscular stance, a sporty front fascia design, a sleek roof profile and a short wheelbase.

Accord V6 models with automatic transmissions have Variable Cylinder Management, an innovative valvetrain system that can deactivate up to half of the cylinders while cruising. The performance-oriented Accord EX-L V6 Coupe with the 6-speed manual transmission uses a special 271-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 VTEC engine that replaces VCM with a performance-tuned valvetrain, intake and exhaust systems to further broaden the torque curve in the low- to mid-rpm range.

Transmission choices of the 2012 Honda Accord vary by engine and trim level. They include a 5-speed manual transmission on some 4-cylinder models and all V6 models. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are standard on the Accord EX-L V6 Coupe with an automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual trans can be had only on the Accord EX-L V6 Coupe.

The most fuel-efficient Accord model is the 4-cylinder sedan equipped with 5-speed automatic transmission, which delivers 23/34/27 mpg city / highway / combined. The EPA-estimated fuel-economy rating for the Accord V6 sedan model is 20 / 30 / 24 mpg city / highway / combined, also with a 5-speed automatic.

The 2012 sedan comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels with alloy wheels on LX-P and SE models; 17-inch alloy wheels are standard on EX and above sedan. The coupe 4-cylinder has 17-inch alloy wheels standard, with 18-inch alloy wheels standard on the Accord V6 Coupe.

All Accords feature Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control and 4-wheel disc brakes with an Anti-Lock Braking System.

Three audio systems are available – all with mp3 / Windows Media Audio playback capability, an auxiliary input jack and the USB audio interface. The standard system provides a single-disc CD player, six speakers and 160 watts of power. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls are standard on every Accord. The Accord EX sedan and LX-S coupe add a 6-disc in-dash changer.

A premium 270-watt audio system is standard on the EX coupe and EX-L sedan. It includes a 6-disc CD changer and seven speakers, including an 8-inch subwoofer. XM Radio is standard equipment on all Accord EX-Ls.

We were wondering why Honda Middle East didn’t do this sooner. Prices of Japanese cars are so high nowadays due to the retarded world of currency fluctuations that the American-built Honda Accord Coupe was priced higher than the Japanese-built Honda Accord sedan in 2011. Of course, now the sedan is also being imported from the United States, although Honda isn’t making a big deal out of it.

What they did announce is that all 2012 Accord sedans, including the basic LX models, will now come with six airbags as well as stability control, ABS and active headrests. But we bet you always knew that U.S. cars got the good stuff as standard.

Not all is good news however. We believe this switch to U.S. supplies has more to do with the Japanese supply shortage after the March earthquake rather than any desire to make Accord sedans cheaper in the GCC. Because UAE prices have actually increased by a tiny bit, with the base 2.4 LX model starting out at Dhs 89,900 and the loaded 2.4 EX navigation-equipped model topping out at Dhs 119,900. The V6 model tops out at around Dhs 138,000.

On another note, Japanese manufacturers have recovered from the March quake much quicker than anticipated, including Honda. Most of them are back at near-original production capacity, so any supply issues are officially over.

The base 2012 Honda Accord LX sedan starts at $22,150, including a $770 destination charge, the same as the outgoing model. The base 2012 Honda Accord LX-S coupe starts at $23,750, including a $770 destination charge, the same as the outgoing model.

Honda has held the line on pricing throughout much of the Accord lineup, with prices remaining the same as the 2011 model on the 2012 Accord EX, EX V-6 and EX-L V6 sedans.

"The 2012 lineup, features and specifications remain similar to the 2011 model year when the Accord received upgrades for fuel economy and styling," said Honda in a statement on Wednesday.

Four engine variations are available on the 2012 Accord, including the base 177-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to the top-of-the-line 271-hp 3.5-liter V6.

The 2012 Accord returns as a four-door sedan and two-door coupe. Both offer four- and six-cylinder engines and the sedan remains among the largest cars in the midsize class. Though newer Accord competitors furnish a wider range of features at various price points, none better balances roominess, build quality, and driving satisfaction. The best 2012 Accord value remains a four-cylinder sedan in midrange EX trim at $25,875 with automatic transmission.

The 2012 Honda Accord sedan and 2012 Honda Accord Coupe carry over the subtle styling changes given the 2011 Accord. Those included minor alterations to the grille and front bumper, red horizontal reflector bars across the sedan’s rump, and revised taillights for the coupe. New wheel designs, repositioned climate controls, and fresh cloth upholstery were also part of the 2011 updates.

Key dimensions were unchanged so the 2012 Accord remains among the most spacious sedans in its class -- if not the most visually appealing. The 2012 Accord Coupe is smaller than the sedan, sacrificing some rear-seat room to achieve a more compact package with sportier handing and svelter lines.

Honda doesn’t offer options per se. Instead it creates individual models, each with an escalating suite of features. The carmaker has closed out previous generations of its vehicles by adding a commemorative model with unique trim and equipment. There’s no such 2012 model, Honda having instead jumped the gun for model-year 2011 by adding a mid-priced Accord SE (Special Edition) sedan that leached some luxury amenities from higher in the lineup.
Thus, the 2012 Accord sedan again begins its lineup with the LX trim level and ascends through LX-P, SE, EX, and EX-L versions. The 2012 Accord Coupe repeats an LX-S, EX, and EX-L model ladder.

Styling distinctions among the 2012 Accord models are minor. The LX sedan comes with 16-inch steel wheels with plastic wheel covers and the LX-P and SE sedans have 16-inch alloys. All other sedan and coupe models have 17-inch alloy wheels, save the EX-L V-6, which has 18s. Accords equipped with the V-6 get chromed instead of body-color door handles, fog lights, and dual exhaust outlets. The EX-L V-6 Coupe also has a body-colored rear spoiler.

Mechanical: The 2012 Honda Accord has no mechanical features that weren’t available on the 2011 Accord. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine again serves the lion’s share of Accord buyers. In the LX, XL-P, and SE sedans it returns at 177 horsepower and 161 pound-feet of torque (think of torque as force that gets a car moving, horsepower as the energy that keeps it moving). In EX and EX-L sedans this four-cylinder is rated at 190 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This version repeats as the base engine in the 2012 Accord Coupe.

On four-cylinder Accords, a five-speed manual transmission is standard on LX and EX sedans and on LX-S and EX Coupes. A five-speed automatic transmission is available at extra cost on those models and is standard on all other four-cylinder sedans and coupes.

The 2012 Accord’s V-6 remains exclusive to the EX V-6 and EX-L V-6 sedans and to the EX-L V-6 Coupe. In the sedans, the V-6 again features Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system, which saves gas by idling three cylinders in low-demand cruising. This 3.5-has 271 horsepower and is rated at 254 pound-feet of torque in the sedans and 251 pound-feet in the coupes.

A five-speed automatic repeats as the sole transmission for Accord V-6 sedans. The Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe is positioned as a performance model and is the only six-cylinder Accord available with manual transmission – a six-speed in this case. It’s also available with the five-speed automatic and coupes thus equipped are the only Accords with steering-wheel paddle shifters for manual-type gear control.

Among Accord engines, the 190-horsepower four-cylinder represents the best blend of price, power, fuel economy, and overall balance. An overwhelming majority of Accord buyers choose automatic transmission, and while Honda’s five-speed automatic works well enough, Accord’s top rivals have more modern and efficient six-speed automatics.

Like the majority of midsize cars, the 2012 Accord again has front-wheel drive. This locates the weight the engine and transmission over the wheels that propel the car. That benefits traction in snow and, by concentrating the powertrain components in the front of the car, leaves maximum space for passengers and cargo.
